Cole the boy - the boy who killed his sister and his father, the mage thrown in the dungeons and forgotten - never died. He was found at the last minute, rescued, after an inquest was deemed innocent and put into training. He had an aptitude for fire, yes, but also for spirits. Better focused on the second, and became a student directly under Rhys. Much of Asunder still happened, even if things were gone about differently. Cole never underwent his harrowing, he never had a chance.

Because Rhys couldn't be punished Lambert got ahold of Cole instead, forcing the boy under the rite of tranquility.

It didn't take, because he wasn't alone. Compassion was with him, see. Spirits touching the minds of mages restore their connection to the Fade, after all. His couldn't properly be severed.

He was still a lone mage surrounded by Templars thirsty for blood, so he kept quiet, was able to pretend. Living in fear under his father all those years did some good after all, for how to keep calm, to not react to things.

Cole cut Lambert's throat as soon as he had the chance. It was an act of compassion.

Compassion also pinged on Envy right away too, whispering to the young mage in his mind what was infesting the templars. Someone had to keep an eye on them. In this manner Cole is still recruited on the Templar quest, and yet still the most templar-hating party member you can get.

He's the missing spirit healer, a strange young man who was still raised in a very screwed up environment so he doesn't always know the right things to say or do. The spirit whispering in his head all the time doesn't help seeming normal, either.

Neither does the whole 'also he uses blood magic sometimes' thing.
